7 Elements To A Successful Residential Move

Moving can be a very exciting but stressful time in your life. We have put together the 7 elements that we feel are important to successfully move your home.

  1. Relocation Logistics Planning. This can be as small as moving across town and only needing to find a new place to live to as cumbersome as moving across the country and getting familiar with a whole new locale. The latter may take plenty of research, phone calls, trips, etc. to find a new residence, plan a closing, enroll children in the local school system, and more. This may also include gathering school and medical records for your new community of providers.

  2. Finding A Mover. In a perfect world, researching moving companies should start two months prior to a move and the mover with a moving plan should be selected one month prior to your move. Recommendations from friends, coworkers and real estate agents are the most popular route of finding good movers. Just make sure you research them online and read their reviews.

  3. Start Packing. About a month before your move date, it is a good time to start packing items that are not used on a daily basis including non seasonal clothing. This is a good time to throw away or donate items that you no longer want or use. Your mover can supply you with packing materials or you can plan for your mover to include packing services in your contract and have them pack you up.

  4. Notify Pertinent Parties. Three weeks before your move, it is time to notify friends, family, services, etc. of your upcoming move. Stop by your local post office or go to usps.gov to fill out a change of address form. Call your current utilities and give them the switch over date to the new address if moving locally or give them a cancel date and forwarding address for final billing.

  5. Final Arrangements. Two weeks before you move, make any final arrangements and confirmations you may need for baby or pet sitters during the move, maid service or pet transportation. If moving long distance, consider donating plants to friends, family or local businesses. And, consider renewing prescriptions for the trip if your move is long distance. This is the perfect time to dispose of any chemicals that are not allowed to travel with you like cleaning supplies, paint, etc. If you are packing yourself, this is the time to pack up everything you can do without over the next two weeks. Start thinking about that food in the freezer and make a few calls to family and friends. We bet they are happy to do a pick up.

  6. Pack Your Must Have Items. One week before your move, pack a few boxes with your must have items that you will want available to use immediately. This list could be as simple as a few boxes of extra clothing to a few boxes for toilet paper, hand soap, coffee maker, tea, mugs, paper plates, napkins, plastic cutlery, etc. Anything you think you might need on the first night in your new home. These items can travel in your car if you are moving close by or can be the last boxes in the moving vans so that they are the first boxes unloaded and ready for you to open and use.

  7. Reconfirm Moving Company. Five days before your move is a great time to reconfirm all the details of your move, ask any questions that may have come up, and make any adjustments or final requests.
